"Lace" was a cartoon character created for the enlisted men by Milton Caniff in the 1940's. It was later used as nose art on the famous B-17 bomber "A Bit O'Lace"  The painting depicts a Me-109 of the Luftwaffe's "Home Defense Force" attacking a formation of B-17's including "A Bit O'Lace."
